We've got a lot to talk about

How Music Ball Transforms Practice Into Motivation

Every fall, something exciting happens at Music SO Simple: our students begin talking about “Music Ball,” forming teams, comparing scores, and suddenly… practicing just a little bit more.

Music Ball has become one of my favorite studio traditions—not just because it’s fun, but because of what it does for our students. This friendly 6-week competition brings out the best in them. And this year, that was clearer than ever.

When I sat down and looked at this year’s Music Ball results (with the help of AI), one thing stood out immediately:
The scores went up almost every single week—across almost every team.

That means:
  • Students practiced more.
  • Stayed accountable.
  • Improved their consistency.
  • And most importantly, felt motivated.
Some teams started strong and stayed strong.
Some started slow and made HUGE jumps.
And some teams skyrocketed near the end with a burst of energy and teamwork.

A few patterns really stood out:
  • The Moons, Rockets, Black Holes, and Comets slowly climbed every week — steady, dedicated effort.
  • The Astronauts had one of the biggest turnarounds: from lower early scores to a huge improvement by Week 6.
  • The Milky Ways, Meteors, and Shooting Stars were powerhouse teams with consistently high scores.
  • And almost every team had their best week near the end of the competition.

As a teacher, that tells me something important:
The more engaged the students became in the game, the more they practiced.

Here’s why it helps students thrive:
Team Accountability
  • Students don’t just practice for themselves—they practice for their team.
  • No one wants to let their teammates down. And suddenly, practicing feels purposeful. But also, students knew when they had one of those bad-practicing weeks, their team would help them out.

Consistency Over Perfection
  • Points are earned for habits:
    • regular practice
    • preparation
    • completing assignments
    • moving forward each week
    • It rewards progress, not perfection.

Joy + Community
  • Students love being part of something bigger.
  • They talk about their teams in the lobby.
  • They cheer each other on. And they "smack-talk" a bit too!
  • They celebrate wins together.
  • It builds community—the heart of our studio.

The Real Magic: Increased Practice
You know what I loved most this year?
Seeing how many teams ended with their highest scores of the entire competition.

That means:
✨ students were practicing more
✨ they were building momentum
✨ they were excited to show up prepared
✨ teachers saw better focus and faster progress

This is exactly why we do Music Ball. It turns practicing into something fun—something students look forward to. And I think that’s what makes Music Ball so special--it reminds our students how capable they really are.
